CTDA Weighs In on California’s New Tire Efficiency Rules
California’s newly approved replacement tire efficiency standards are drawing attention to the potential costs and challenges facing tire dealers and consumers.
KTVU FOX 2 recently examined the California Energy Commission’s new regulations, which establish rolling-resistance requirements for replacement tires beginning in 2029, with a second phase scheduled for 2033.
The report highlights concerns from tire industry representatives about affordability, consumer choice, and the number of tires currently available that may no longer meet California’s requirements as the standards take effect.
CTDA Executive Director Marc Connerly spoke with KTVU about the potential impact, including a more limited selection of tires and concerns that higher upfront costs could cause some consumers to delay replacing worn tires.
Read KTVU’s full report for more on the new standards and perspectives from CTDA, tire manufacturers, local tire dealers, and the California Energy Commission.
